Principle Designer & Project Manager:
Brenda Be

Background

Brenda's studies in art and design began at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth- in Sculpture, and the Studio Furniture division of the Program in Artisanry. Here she began an ongoing exploration of varied, unusual, and reclaimed materials; learned essential construction techniques in wood and metal; and absorbed principles of composition, color, and form. She later worked in Graphic Design for companies such as Gillette and Simon & Schuster, continuing work with color, shape, and space.

Influences

Brenda is influenced by many artists' use of color, form, and materials, including Stephen Whittlesey, Joseph Cornell, Mark Rothko, Sol Lewitt, and Kiki Smith. She is also influenced by materials or forms she encounters in research.

Some of the many architectural and design styles she draws from include Arts and Crafts, Industrial, Mid-Century Modern, and Victorian. She often draws from two to three primary styles / periods on a project, incorporating elements from a building's original period, another from later in its lifespan, and perhaps a third of particular interest to a client.

Methods

Brenda designs for architectural interiors in the same way as she creates a work of art: by addressing materials, process, humor, function, and theme (style). The design process for her is a collaboration with the client's taste and needs, the strengths and weaknesses of building and site, and the challenges of budget. The goal is a project which is a complete whole with as much interest and integrity as a sculpture or installation.

Brenda strives to never work rigidly in any one historical or contemporary mode, but to design interiors that seem to have naturally "grown" within building and site to perfectly suit the lifestyle and aesthetics of the client - which feel at once both timeless, and completely fresh.

Consultants and Contractors

All the members of the beTM team come together on a project basis, reducing overhead and thus cost to the client. They have been selected for expertise in individual areas coupled with integrity and commitment to the highest quality construction at cost effective rates, along with a constant willingness to stretch the boundaries of the possible in innovative construction technique.

We have access to a roster of professionals in construction and maintenance areas, and choose each according to expertise in a given area and appropriateness to a given project.

Design Assistant and Artistic Finish Specialist:
Laura Justine
Laura majored in Multidisciplinary Arts at Clarke University with a focus in Oil Painting, Printmaking, and Encaustic (painting with wax). She spent several years in faux finishing and theatre scenic painting in New York.

General Contractor and Carpentry Consultant:
Harry Busteed
Harry has over thirty years experience in Carpentry and General Contracting, in this country and in Ireland. He is intensely cost conscious and has a troubleshooting orientation. Harry could charm a marble statue, and seems well acquainted with everyone from the clerk at the town dump to the members of the zoning committee.

General Contractor and Carpentry Consultant:
Scott Mandeville
Scott's attention to detail and fine workmanship make him an excellent choice where fine finish carpentry and custom cabinetry are called for.

Electrical Services and Consulting:
Robert F. Davis
Robert is a consummate professional who is always in demand because he does exactly what he says he will, when he says he will, in exactly the right way. Electrical inspectors have been known to swoon over his work.

Structural Engineering:
Simpson, Gumpertz and Heger
Although not formally affiliated, we have used the services of SGH for larger structural engineering needs. They have done many renowned projects in the Boston area such as the New England Medical Center Floating Hospital and Boston Public Library Renovation. They work quickly and efficiently and their firm is well respected by Boston ISD, making structural inspections and plan reviews a less harrowing process.

Architectural Drawings and Consulting:
Ed Danielson
When we have need of architectural services such as new As-Built Drawings for Condo Conversions we work with Ed for prompt and accurate drawings or consultations.

Wood Floor Installation and Refinishing:
Nam Phan
Many of the realtors in Brookline and Boston turn to Nam for referrals to clients and wood floor work in their own homes. We turn to him for on-time, on-budget installation or finishing of any and all wood floors and related products. He has the team to get the work done, and never hesitates to take on labor-intensive re-use or patterned projects.

Tile and Stone Installation:
Peter Boutourline
Peter can work with nearly any or all tile or interior stone project be it wall, floor, or other surfaces. He can work within the constraints of intricate formal or 'random' patterns or difficult materials such as glass, and he is very cost conscious and able to suggest lower cost alternatives for tight budget situations.
